Death by Scrolling is heading to consoles next week, with the fast-paced roguelike officially launching on April 16, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. The announcement marks a significant expansion for the game, which first debuted on PC in late 2025 before building a following through its chaotic, arcade-style gameplay.

Developed by Terrible Toybox, the studio led by Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert, and published by MicroProse, Death by Scrolling blends classic roguelike progression with a constantly moving vertical playfield. Players are tasked with climbing through the bizarre depths of a corporate-styled afterlife, where every second counts as the screen relentlessly pushes upward.

The core gameplay loop is built around speed, survival and decision-making under pressure. Players choose from a range of characters, each with unique abilities, before attempting to ascend through increasingly chaotic levels filled with enemies, hazards and power-ups. The ever-present threat comes from below, where the rising screen forces constant movement, turning even brief hesitation into a potential run-ending mistake.

Combat and progression are tightly interwoven, with players collecting gold and resources during each run to unlock upgrades and abilities. Alongside this, encounters with vendors and optional side challenges provide additional layers of strategy, allowing players to tailor their approach depending on risk and reward.

The console release is not just a straight port. It arrives alongside a major update that introduces a new playable character, an additional biome and a range of gameplay improvements. This simultaneous update across both PC and console versions highlights the developers’ ongoing support for the title as it reaches a wider audience.

Tonally, Death by Scrolling leans into humour as much as challenge. Set in a version of purgatory run like a bureaucratic nightmare, the game mixes absurd dialogue with frantic action, creating a distinct identity within the roguelike genre. The constant pursuit by the Reaper adds further tension, ensuring that players are never given a moment to settle.

The April 16 console launch positions the game to reach a broader player base, particularly on platforms where quick-session, replayable titles often thrive. With its combination of tight mechanics, escalating difficulty and offbeat presentation, Death by Scrolling is aiming to translate its PC momentum into a successful multi-platform release.
