Baseball Stars Professional is an arcade baseball game developed and published by SNK. It was first released for the Neo Geo MVS in 1990 before later appearing on the Neo Geo CD in 1995. As part of the wider Baseball Stars series, it followed the original NES game while taking the concept in a more visually ambitious arcade direction. It was also the first baseball title released for the Neo Geo platform, establishing a sports presence for SNK alongside the company’s better-known action and fighting games.

Unlike a heavily detailed baseball simulation, Baseball Stars Professional focuses on fast, accessible arcade play. Players choose from fictional teams and compete in matches across a small selection of ballparks, with the emphasis placed on immediate action rather than team-building or long-term management. There is no major storyline beyond the sporting contest itself, but the game presents baseball with a theatrical arcade style, turning each match into a lively competition built around batting, pitching and fielding rather than narrative progression.

Gameplay is simple to understand, with players taking control of pitching, batting, base running and fielding. Batting depends heavily on timing and positioning, while pitching allows for variation in speed and placement. Fielding is more divisive, as the game’s control system can feel awkward compared with later baseball titles, especially when the action shifts quickly after a hit. Even so, the overall pace keeps matches moving, and the two-player mode gives the game much of its lasting appeal, particularly as a quick competitive sports title.

Presentation was one of the game’s strongest qualities at release. Baseball Stars Professional used colourful sprites, large player models and energetic animations to show off the Neo Geo hardware. The sound design also played an important role, with crowd noise, umpire calls, batting impacts and upbeat music helping to create a lively stadium atmosphere. The soundtrack, credited to Toshikazu Tanaka, supports the action with bright, energetic sports themes, and the Neo Geo CD version gives the audio a cleaner presence compared with earlier cartridge-based releases.

Reception to Baseball Stars Professional was mixed. At the time, it was praised for its visuals, sound and arcade presentation, but some criticism was aimed at its limited modes, simplified structure and sometimes awkward fielding. Looking back, it is often seen as an important early Neo Geo sports title rather than the strongest baseball game on the system. Its sequel, Baseball Stars 2, would later refine the formula with faster pacing and a more exaggerated style, but Baseball Stars Professional remains notable as the foundation for SNK’s Neo Geo baseball line.
