Crossed Swords is a fantasy action game developed by Alpha Denshi and published by SNK, first released for the Neo Geo MVS arcade system in 1991 before later appearing on Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo CD. The Neo Geo CD version was released in 1994, bringing one of the more distinctive early Neo Geo action titles to the format. Rather than following a conventional side-scrolling structure, Crossed Swords uses a first-person-style viewpoint, placing the player behind a visible sword and shield while enemies advance from the distance. It would later receive a direct sequel, Crossed Swords II, which was released for Neo Geo CD in 1995 and expanded on the same basic concept with new characters and refinements.
The game is set in the kingdom of Belkana, which has fallen under threat from the demon warlord Nausizz and his army of monsters. Players take the role of a knight fighting to protect the kingdom, travelling through a series of fantasy locations while battling soldiers, beasts, sorcerers and larger boss enemies. The storyline is simple, but it gives the action a clear heroic framework, with each stage pushing the player closer to the final confrontation. Its tone is rooted in swords-and-sorcery adventure, combining medieval weaponry, magic and monstrous enemies in a way that separates it from SNK’s more urban or martial arts-focused titles of the period.
Gameplay is built around close-range sword combat, blocking and careful timing. Players can move left and right, raise a shield to defend, strike with a sword and use magic attacks when available. The viewpoint gives the game an unusual rhythm, as enemies approach from the background before engaging directly at the front of the screen. Success depends less on rushing forward and more on reading enemy movements, blocking at the right time and choosing when to counterattack. Role-playing elements are also included, with gold earned during play and shops allowing players to buy items, weapons and magic. Two-player cooperative play adds further appeal, allowing both players to fight side by side against the game’s increasingly aggressive enemies.
Presentation is one of Crossed Swords’ most memorable qualities. The first-person-style perspective helps create a strong sense of depth, while scaling effects make enemies appear to move toward the player from the distance. Character and enemy designs are clear and atmospheric, with a darker fantasy tone that suits the game’s setting. The soundtrack supports the adventure with dramatic compositions that match the medieval combat and monster-filled stages, while sound effects give weight to sword strikes, shield blocks and magical attacks. On Neo Geo CD, the audio has a cleaner presence, helping the music and effects stand out more clearly during play and giving the game’s fantasy setting more atmosphere.
Reception to Crossed Swords has generally been mixed to positive. At the time, its unusual viewpoint and fantasy combat helped it stand apart from more conventional arcade action games, and it was often appreciated for its atmosphere, two-player option and distinctive mechanics. However, later criticism has focused on repetition, limited movement and a pace that can feel stiff compared with faster action titles. Looking back, Crossed Swords is usually seen as an imaginative but imperfect experiment: not one of SNK’s most refined games, but a memorable title with a clear identity. Its sequel would improve and expand on several ideas, but the original remains notable for its unusual approach to arcade sword-fighting and its blend of action and light role-playing elements.
