The story takes place aboard the colony ship Cassiopeia as humanity searches desperately for a future beyond a dying Earth. The crew travels toward Tau Ceti f, a planet viewed as one of humanity’s final hopes for survival, but disaster strikes when the ship crash lands during the mission. Isolated far from Earth and trapped with a hostile organism capable of perfectly mimicking its prey, the crew begins to lose trust in one another as paranoia spreads through the surviving members. The situation becomes increasingly dangerous as characters struggle to determine who is still human and who may already have been replaced.

At the centre of the narrative is the astronaut Young, portrayed by Lashana Lynch. Supermassive Games has increasingly embraced cinematic presentation and performance capture in its recent projects, and Directive 8020 continues that direction with a heavy focus on character interactions, emotional tension and branching dialogue. The game places major emphasis on player choice, with decisions affecting relationships, survival outcomes and the direction of the story itself. As with previous titles from the studio, characters can live or die depending on player actions, encouraging multiple playthroughs to uncover different outcomes and hidden narrative paths.

A major gameplay addition comes through the new Turning Points story tree system, which allows players to revisit important decisions and explore alternative story branches. This feature reinforces the game’s replayability by making it easier to investigate how specific choices alter character fates and narrative developments. Each participant can take control of different crew members as the story progresses, sharing responsibility for key decisions and survival outcomes. This mode continues one of Supermassive Games’ most recognisable multiplayer features, transforming the experience into a collaborative horror story where disagreements and mistakes can have major consequences. Combined with the branching narrative structure, this format encourages repeated sessions with different groups and different decision-making approaches.

At the time of writing, Directive 8020 holds a mixed rating on Steam, and much of that response appears connected to player expectations surrounding the balance between cinematic storytelling and gameplay depth. Some players have praised the atmosphere, visual presentation and paranoia-driven science-fiction horror themes, particularly the alien mimic concept and branching narrative systems. However, others have criticised pacing issues, technical problems and sections where the gameplay can feel secondary to cutscenes and scripted sequences. There has also been discussion among players regarding performance stability and whether certain gameplay systems feel fully developed compared to the game’s strong cinematic ambitions.
