Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was released for PlayStation 5 on 29 February 2024 and PC on 23 January 2025, before being released for Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 on 3 June 2026. Developed and published by Square Enix, it is the second game in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, continuing the reimagined journey that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake. Rather than simply retelling the original story scene for scene, Rebirth expands the adventure beyond Midgar and turns the next stage of Cloud Strife’s journey into a vast, character-driven RPG about fate, memory, identity and the future of the Planet.
The game begins after Cloud and his companions escape Midgar, the City of Mako, and step into the wider world for the first time. That shift is central to Rebirth’s identity. Where Remake focused heavily on one city and its districts, Rebirth opens the adventure into grassy plains, settlements, wilderness regions and broader routes across the Planet. Chocobo travel, exploration and large open regions give the journey a stronger sense of scale, making the world feel less like a backdrop and more like a place being shaped by Shinra’s exploitation, Sephiroth’s influence and the uncertain path ahead.
The story continues to revolve around the lifestream, the cycle of life and death that connects all living things to the Planet. Shinra Electric Power Company drains that essence and processes it as mako, turning the Planet’s life force into industrial power. Against that backdrop, Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret and their allies move forward after surviving Midgar, chasing answers while facing dangers that are both political and supernatural. Rebirth keeps the environmental and spiritual themes of Final Fantasy VII at the centre, while adding new layers through its altered timeline and renewed focus on destiny.
Zack Fair also plays a significant role in the wider narrative. The story follows him beyond the wastelands outside Midgar, wounded and exhausted as he supports a mako-poisoned Cloud. His presence adds another strand to the game’s mystery, especially as ominous rifts and questions of life, death and fate continue to reshape familiar events. Alongside this, the Wutai interim government and the Shinra Resistance Committee add political tension, while black-robed figures carrying Jenova’s remains deepen the sense that the world is moving towards something catastrophic.
The game’s combat builds on the hybrid action and command-based systems established in Remake. Players control party members in real time while using ATB abilities, magic, summons and tactical switching to manage increasingly dangerous encounters. Rebirth also benefits from a larger playable cast and more varied party dynamics, making battles feel more flexible across the adventure. The appeal comes from that blend of spectacle and strategy: it is fast and cinematic, but still asks players to think about positioning, pressure, stagger, elemental weaknesses and how different characters complement each other.
Exploration is a major part of the experience. The world beyond Midgar includes wide regions, side activities, minigames, combat challenges and optional discoveries that help give the journey a broader pace. This is not only a story-driven RPG moving from cutscene to cutscene; it is also a road trip across a world full of detours, local conflicts and moments of character interaction. The ability to ride chocobos across grassy plains captures that sense of freedom, while the wider structure gives players time to spend with the party away from the immediate pressure of the main plot.
The PC version adds technical features aimed at modern hardware, including support for up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS, enhanced lighting and textures, variable refresh rate, NVIDIA DLSS and DualSense controller support. Those features help position Rebirth as a visually ambitious RPG beyond its original PlayStation 5 release, especially for players with powerful PCs. The game’s scale, cinematic presentation, detailed environments and character animation are all major parts of its identity, so the upgraded options give players more ways to experience its world at a higher level of visual and performance quality.
At the time of writing, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has a Very Positive rating on Steam, and its strong reception reflects the breadth of what Square Enix has built. The game combines a beloved cast, wide-region exploration, dramatic storytelling, refined combat, memorable music and a fresh approach to one of the most famous RPGs ever made. It also gives long-time fans something more complex than a simple remake, while giving newer players a grand adventure with modern presentation and a clear emotional core. For anyone drawn to large-scale RPGs, cinematic storytelling and the continuing mystery of Cloud, Sephiroth and the Planet, Rebirth stands as one of Square Enix’s most ambitious modern releases.
