Project: Mist was released for PC in Early Access on 19 May 2026, developed by Chicken Launcher and published by Chicken Launcher. It is an open-world survival horror game set on a remote island filled with abandoned facilities, strange ecosystems, hostile creatures and hidden dangers. Rather than focusing on one narrow survival loop, it combines exploration, crafting, combat, base building and co-operative play, giving players a harsh environment where progress depends on preparation, adaptation and the ability to recover from mistakes.

The central setup places players in a dangerous open world where every decision can carry consequences. Resources matter, encounters can escalate quickly, and survival depends on knowing when to fight, when to flee and when to regroup. Project: Mist is designed for solo play or seamless online co-op for up to four players, which gives the experience two slightly different identities. Alone, it is more isolating and tense; with friends, it becomes a shared survival challenge built around teamwork, role coordination and reacting together when the island turns hostile.

The remote island setting is one of the game’s main draws. Its world includes abandoned, mysterious facilities, environmental hazards, strange wildlife and areas shaped by unseen experiments or events. This gives Project: Mist a strong sci-fi survival horror flavour, where the player is not simply gathering wood and food in a wilderness, but pushing deeper into a place that has clearly gone badly wrong. For players interested in lesser-known PC survival games, that mixture of open-world exploration and facility-based horror gives the game a more distinctive identity than a standard wilderness crafting title.

Combat is built around both conventional survival tools and the Gravity Gun, one of Project: Mist’s most important mechanics. This device allows players to manipulate objects, enemies and debris, turning the environment into part of the fight. That makes encounters more flexible than simply aiming and shooting, because players can create space, improvise attacks or use physics to solve problems during combat and traversal. Against giant creatures, bosses and other threats, the Gravity Gun helps give the game its own hook, especially when survival depends on using the world creatively rather than relying on brute force.

The moving train base is another defining feature. Instead of building a static shelter and returning to it between expeditions, players can upgrade, fortify and defend a base that travels with them as they push deeper into the island. This creates a sense of forward momentum, with the train acting as home, workshop, defence platform and long-term survival project. Customising its layout and defences should appeal to players who enjoy base-building systems, while the fact it moves helps Project: Mist avoid feeling like another fixed-camp survival game.

Progression is supported by crafting, farming, hunting, cooking and equipment upgrades. Players can gather resources, build weapons and tools, hunt wildlife, catch strange bugs and small creatures, then use food and unusual bonuses to adjust their strategy. Character and gear upgrades also help shape how players explore, fight and handle increasingly dangerous areas. This gives the game a wider survival structure around the horror and action elements, with preparation between encounters becoming just as important as the moment-to-moment response when something emerges from the mist.

At the time of writing, Project: Mist has a negative-leaning Steam reception, and that reaction appears to reflect the risks of launching an ambitious survival horror game in Early Access with a small but vocal review base. The concept is clearly strong: co-op survival, a remote island, giant creatures, a Gravity Gun, a moving train base and open-world crafting all give it an easy hook. However, the early response suggests players are running into rough edges around polish, optimisation, bugs, hitboxes, enemy behaviour, unfinished-feeling areas and the general feel of the current build. With only a small number of reviews visible at this stage, the rating should be read as an early warning sign rather than a final verdict on the full project.

For players interested in under-the-radar PC survival horror, Project: Mist is best approached as a developing Early Access release with ambition but also clear uncertainty. Its strongest ideas are immediately apparent: survive a hostile island, explore strange facilities, manipulate the world with physics, build a mobile train base and face threats too large to handle carelessly. Whether it fulfils that promise will depend on how effectively Chicken Launcher responds to feedback, improves stability and expands the experience during development. For those willing to follow an evolving survival game from an early stage, Project: Mist offers a striking premise, but its negative Steam reception at the time of writing makes it one to approach with measured expectations.
