RoadOut was released on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and Nintendo Switch on 14 May, 2026, developed by Rastrolabs Game Studio and published by DANGEN Entertainment. Blending post-apocalyptic action RPG mechanics with twin-stick combat and high-speed vehicular gameplay, the game combines open-world exploration, dungeon crawling and arcade-style racing within a harsh futuristic wasteland. Drawing inspiration from titles such as The Legend of Zelda, Grand Theft Auto and Rock N’ Roll Racing, RoadOut creates a world driven by faction conflict, cybernetic enhancement and survival inside a collapsing society ruled by artificial intelligence.

The story follows Claire, a survivor living within a desert region known as The Dead Zone after a catastrophic global collapse. The world outside has been transformed by the rise of an A.I. force, leaving scattered rebel groups and criminal factions struggling for power inside the remaining habitable territory. Claire survives by carrying out black market contracts for local leaders, taking on jobs involving deliveries, sabotage and assassination. As her work pulls her deeper into the politics of The Dead Zone, she begins uncovering evidence linking her own existence to the origins of the A.I. responsible for the world’s destruction.

The Dead Zone itself acts as the central setting for exploration and progression. Described as a large artificial biome designed to sustain humanity after the cataclysm, the region combines desert highways, gang-controlled territory and dangerous wilderness populated by hostile enemies. Players travel through this environment primarily by car, taking on quests, joining factions and engaging rival gangs while advancing Claire’s story. The game’s driving systems are deeply connected to exploration, with vehicles functioning not only as transportation but also as an important part of survival and combat throughout the wasteland.

Combat in RoadOut shifts between vehicular encounters and on-foot action. While driving, Claire’s car can be equipped with weapons and technology designed to defend against bandits, dangerous wildlife and hostile factions. Once players leave the vehicle, the game transitions into twin-stick combat combined with dungeon exploration. Claire can use close-range and long-range attacks, defend herself with a shield and recover using crafted drugs gathered during exploration. This combination of vehicle combat and character-based action helps create a gameplay loop that constantly alternates between open-road travel and more focused combat scenarios.

Dungeon exploration introduces puzzle-solving mechanics alongside combat encounters. The game uses fully rotatable stack-sprite visuals that present environments with a 2D appearance while operating within 3D spaces. These locations encourage players to investigate carefully while solving environmental puzzles and battling enemies hidden throughout abandoned structures and hostile territory. The visual approach gives RoadOut a distinctive identity, combining retro-inspired presentation with more modern environmental design techniques. This helps reinforce the game’s mixture of classic influences and contemporary action RPG systems.

Character progression is built heavily around crafting, cybernetics and customisation. Players can modify Claire using body enhancements and cybernetic upgrades while unlocking additional combat options through an intricate skill tree system. Weapons, drugs and special moves can also be crafted to improve survival against increasingly dangerous enemies. Claire’s vehicle receives similar attention, with upgrades allowing it to handle rough terrain, weather conditions and nighttime travel more effectively. These systems encourage players to gradually shape both character and vehicle around their preferred approach to exploration and combat.

Racing also forms a major part of the experience. Despite the harsh setting, RoadOut embraces arcade-style competitive events across multiple tracks and biomes scattered throughout the wasteland. The game features traditional races alongside destruction derby-inspired modes and combat arena events where survival matters as much as speed. Combined with the game’s synthwave soundtrack and high-speed driving mechanics, these events add another layer of variety to the overall experience. Rather than existing separately from the world itself, racing appears woven directly into the culture and entertainment of The Dead Zone.

RoadOut combines open-world driving, action RPG progression and post-apocalyptic storytelling into a distinctive hybrid experience shaped by both retro and modern influences. Its mixture of twin-stick combat, dungeon exploration, cybernetic upgrades and vehicular warfare helps it stand apart from more traditional action RPG releases, while the faction-driven setting and synthwave-inspired presentation give the game a strong visual and thematic identity. By balancing exploration, combat and racing within a hostile wasteland environment, RoadOut delivers a broad but focused adventure built around survival, mobility and uncovering the truth hidden beneath the ruins of a broken world.
