Epic Games has unveiled its latest free PC giveaway, with Batman: The Telltale Series – Shadows Edition now available to claim through the Epic Games Store until May 21. The offer gives players the chance to add the dark reimagining of Telltale’s episodic Batman adventure to their library permanently without paying anything, as long as it is redeemed before the promotion expires.

Originally developed by Telltale Games, Batman: The Telltale Series first launched in 2016, delivering a narrative-focused take on the iconic DC hero. Rather than concentrating entirely on gadget-heavy combat or open-world action, the game placed a stronger emphasis on Bruce Wayne himself, exploring the political corruption, personal relationships and moral dilemmas surrounding Gotham City and the Wayne family legacy.

The Shadows Edition later reworked the visual presentation of the original game, introducing a dramatic noir-inspired art style built around stark black-and-white visuals with selective use of colour. The result gives Gotham a much darker and more stylised appearance compared to the standard version, helping the experience feel closer to a moving graphic novel than a traditional superhero game. Certain elements such as blood, lighting and key environmental details are highlighted through colour accents, adding extra atmosphere throughout major scenes and confrontations.

Like many of Telltale’s releases from that era, Batman: The Telltale Series revolves around player choice and branching narrative decisions. Conversations, investigations and critical moral choices can all influence how relationships develop across the story, with characters reacting differently depending on how players choose to approach situations. Decisions made as Bruce Wayne can also affect events when operating as Batman, creating tension between maintaining public appearances and pursuing justice behind the mask.

The game features many well-known Batman characters including Harvey Dent, Catwoman, Alfred Pennyworth, Commissioner Gordon and the Children of Arkham, while also presenting alternative interpretations of several familiar figures from the wider DC universe. Rather than simply retelling existing comic storylines, Telltale’s version of Batman focuses heavily on detective work, political intrigue and psychological pressure placed upon Bruce Wayne as both a billionaire public figure and vigilante crime fighter.

Gameplay itself combines cinematic storytelling with investigation sequences, dialogue choices and quick-time combat encounters. While action scenes remain an important part of the experience, the overall structure leans much more heavily into narrative progression and player-driven storytelling than traditional action-focused Batman games such as the Arkham series.

The Shadows Edition also arrived alongside updates designed to refine the presentation of the original release. The noir filter can dramatically change the tone of scenes throughout the story, particularly during nighttime investigations and confrontations across Gotham’s rain-soaked streets. For players who missed the original release, the updated edition arguably offers one of the most visually distinctive ways to experience Telltale’s interpretation of Batman.

Epic Games has continued using weekly giveaways to drive traffic towards its storefront, frequently rotating between indie releases, major franchises and narrative-driven experiences. Batman: The Telltale Series – Shadows Edition adds another recognisable franchise to the service’s growing catalogue of free offerings, particularly appealing to players interested in story-heavy adventures and comic-inspired games.

As with previous Epic Games Store giveaways, players simply need to claim the title before the deadline in order to permanently attach it to their account. Once redeemed, the game remains accessible even after the promotional period comes to an end.

Batman: The Telltale Series – Shadows Edition is free to claim now through the Epic Games Store until May 21.
